How to change oil in an outboard motor (Step-by-Step)
- Warm up the engine for a few minutes to make the oil flow more easily (especially if it’s cold out).
- Use a vacuum extractor through the dipstick tube or remove the oil drain screw.
- Place a container or petroleum sorbent pad beneath the engine to catch any spills.
- Remove the old gasket and install a fresh crush washer before tightening the drain plug back on.
- Apply a small amount of oil to the O-ring on your new Yamalube filter and install it snugly by hand.
- Add new oil—10W-30, 20W-40, or 5W-30 Synthetic, depending on your engine.
- Start the engine, let it run briefly, then shut it off and re-check the dipstick. Top off if needed.
Still unsure how to change oil in an outboard motor? Our included instructions walk you through it, step by step.
How often should you change oil in a Yamaha 4-stroke outboard?
Yamaha recommends an oil change every 100 hours of use or at least once a year—whichever comes first. For brand-new motors, your first oil change should be done after the first 20 hours of use. After that, stick to the 100-hour mark to avoid performance drops or engine wear.
Can I use car oil in my Yamaha outboard?
Short answer: No. Yamaha outboards need oil formulated for marine use. Automotive oil doesn’t have the anti-foaming agents or saltwater corrosion resistance marine engines deal with daily. That’s why Yamalube 4M and Yamalube 2M were created—to handle those exact conditions.
How is Yamalube different from regular oil?
Yamalube oil isn’t just tweaked car oil. It’s been designed from the ground up for Yamaha marine engines. That includes high-RPM stability, anti-foam chemistry, and corrosion-fighting detergents that handle salt, humidity, and heat. If you're trolling all day or ripping full throttle for miles, Yamalube is built for it.
Even better, it’s been tested and approved by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA)—which means it’s met some of the highest standards for marine performance. And yes, our oil change kits come with the same stuff.
Are all oil filters the same?
Definitely not. Yamaha oil filters are built differently than your typical aftermarket version. They use metal filter bases instead of cardboard and are packed with marine-grade filtration media. That means better durability, cleaner oil, and less risk of engine wear. You can browse our full lineup of Yamaha oil filters if you need extras or spares.
How do you remove old oil from your Yamaha outboard?
You’ve got two main choices: use a vacuum extractor through the dipstick tube, or remove the engine’s drain screw and let gravity do the work. The extractor is cleaner—most techs prefer it—but both are fine. If you're draining through the plug, make sure to catch the oil in a large enough container (some V6 engines hold up to 7 quarts).
Warming up the engine beforehand helps a lot. Thinner oil drains faster and more thoroughly, so it’s smart to do this first before the rest of your 100-hour service checklist.
How do you install the new filter and refill with oil?
After draining the oil, toss the old gasket and wipe everything clean. Add a little clean oil to the new filter’s O-ring, screw it on carefully, and tighten it just enough to seat the ring. Don’t overdo it. Then, pop off the yellow fill cap and pour in your new Yamalube oil. Start with just under the full amount listed, run the engine for a bit, and then double-check the dipstick. If the level’s low, top it off.
And if you're also planning to change your Yamaha outboard lower unit lubrication, now’s the perfect time to do both jobs at once.
TL;DR:
Changing oil in an outboard motor doesn’t have to be a chore. With a Yamaha oil change kit, it’s fast and clean: warm the engine, drain the oil, swap the filter, and refill with marine-grade Yamalube. Do it every 100 hours—or once a year—and your Yamaha will keep running strong.
